Lakeland, the largest and youngest city in the county, was fondly
names for its many lakes and is renowned for its natural beauty.
Lakeland's central location between Tampa and Orlando provides
comfortable and affordable living with easy access to large metropolitan areas. Major industries
are citrus, phosphate mining, tourism, light manufacturing, distribution,
retailing and service. Also, Lakeland Regional Medical Center
and Watson Clinic have made Lakeland a leading medical center
in Florida. Opportunities for advanced education are readily available
at Florida Southern College, Southeastern College and the University
of South Florida/Polk Community College. Florida Southern College,
on the shores of Lake Hollingsworth, boasts the world's largest
collection of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed architecture. Cultural
opportunities abound, such as the Polk Museum of Art, Imperial
Symphony Orchestra, and the Polk Theatre. The nationally recognized
Lakeland Center has hosted the nation's top entertainers, ballet
troops, Broadway plays, and the Miss USA Pageant. The center is
also the training venue for the Tampa Bay Lightning, a national
Hockey League franchise.
